Green Independence
Discovering Algae's Promise for our World
Sustainable and affordable food and energy are needed locally, regionally and globally. Green Independence is an open source, non-profit social venture designed to advance research, development, demonstration and diffusion of novel solutions that enable SAFE production for anyone on Earth who has desire and need. SAFE production with green solar energy captured in algal biomass is carbon neutral with a positive environmental footprint and can occur anywhere on Earth. Green solar energy captured in algae uses no or minimal cropland, freshwater, fossil fuels or pesticides because algal biomass can be grown without vital, expensive and diminishing natural resources. Green solar uses low cost inputs that will not run out -- sunshine, CO2 and wastewater and reclaims, recycles and reuses nutrients lost to the human, animal and industrial waste streams to grow nutritious food and high-value biofuels.
Green Independence focuses developing and diffusing the knowledge and capability to create freedom from:
- Hunger -- create and share knowledge for SAFE production globally so people with desire can produce for their family and community locally.
- Malnutrition -- apply algae's ability to bioaccumulate nutrients from waste, brine or ocean water to supply critical micronutrients to children, adults and animals.
- Fossil fuels -- develop capability for carbon neutral energy production for liquid transportation fuels such as diesel, gasoline and JP-8, jet fuel.
- Fire -- produce algal biomass and oil for cooking and heating fires that burn cleanly and save 4 million lives a year from smoke death.
- Fodder -- provide nutritious, low-cost organic feed for fish, fowl and animals.
- Forest loss -- stop overgrazing by growing algae locally for animal fodder.
- Fertilizer -- provide affordable organic fertilizer without the use of fossil fuels.
- Fresh water -- use algae to clean water that may be too saline or polluted with human, animal or industrial wastes.
- Fresh air -- sequester CO2 from industrial sources such as coal-fired power plants, cement production and refineries.
- Fabrics -- use the algal biomass carbohydrates to make biodegradable plastics, paper and textiles.
- Disaster relief -- bring the knowledge and capability for SAFE production in green solar gardens to people who have experienced disasters so they can grow their own food and energy.
- Foreign aid -- share the knowledge and capability for safe production and green solar gardens so people can grow their own food and energy locally.
- Fine medicines -- take advantage of algal production for medicines, vaccines, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals.
Green Independence serves as an open source collaboratory for scientists, educators, students and policy makers who focus on algal solutions that create more social equity, moderate climate change, deforestation, smoke death, plastic pollution and diseasse preventable with algal biomass and coproducts.
Oil independence, sustainable and affordable food and halting climate change represent the most critical challenges of the 21st Century, not just for America but for all nations. Our best hope for solving these crucial challenges lies in the oldest and tiniest yet fastest growing plant on Earth — the same plant that once saved the planet; algae.
We partner closely with our sister site, desertbiofuels.org/ in an effort to promote our vision of sustainable regional biofuels.
